Combo TPMG/TSG shoot results……

Flickr, Photography, TPMG, TSG
I'm doing a double photo post, since I didn't get a chance to do the TPMG (Toronto Photography Meetup GroupĀ ) one earlier last week. The TPMG meetup was over at the Graffiti Alley in Downtown Toronto. It's a really cool place and against everyones advice I decided to shoot with B&W in mind. Used my trusty yellowing Pentax Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4 and converted to Black and White in Aperture. I think the results are good, and I like the gritty look to them. You be the judge. The other shoot happened today as TSG (Toronto Strobist Group) had meeting #8 at Ryerson University. There was no real theme to it, but I decided to grab a wide angle lens (Canon 28mm f/1.8) and try my hands at emulating Platon a…

WinterCity ’09 – Pi-Leau by Close-Act

Flickr, Photography, Toronto, TPMG
Dutch street theatre troupe, Close-Act, transformed Nathan Phillips Square into a mythical under-water world that floats high above the audience. I had a chance to see the show twice (Friday and Saturday Night) and have to admit.....It was amazing. Themes of global warming and environmental struggles were evident, but at its heart this is a story of forbidden love that combines theatre, music, fire, dance and incredible props. It will be here for another two shows next weekend, so if you live in Toronto (or are visiting), definitely drop by City Hall and check out the show. It's about 1 hour and well worth it.

TPMG visits Toronto Zoo…or…How I busted my camera shutter…

Flickr, Photography, Toronto, TPMG, Zoo
Well it finally happened yesterday. I busted the shutter curtain on my faithful Canon 1DMKII. Took a trip to Toronto Zoo and about an hour into the trip the shutter literally ripped (Damn Orangutans, I think one of them jinxed the camera :-)). I think the cooling (-15C outside) and heating (+25C inside) might have had something to do with it, plus the fact I was firing off at 8 frames/s. Anyways, I did get to fire off the couple of shots before camera went nuclear on me....More on flickr....

XREZ: Megapixel is for kids….time to upgrade to Gigapixel….

Disruptive Technology, panorama, Photography, Technology
Yep, throw out your punny megapixel this and that camera. Time to check out Gigapixel. Head over to Xres.com and check out their gigapixel panorama's from around the world. They are absolutely mind blowing. The two images above should give you an idea what we're talking about. The amount of detail is astounishing. If you're really impressed and want to do your own gigapixel images, you can. Gigapansystems.com is trying to democtratize this field by providing a cheap ($279) robotic paning head that would allow you to produce these type images. I ordered mine today :-).

Toronto Photography Meetup Group goes to Toronto Cavalcade of Lights

Flickr, Photography
Last night we all met at Tim Hortons across from City Hall and went over to Nathan Phillips Square to shoot the show. We were hassled by the security who claimed that since we were using tripods (dahhh, it's dark out and I want to shoot fireworks buddy) we must be professionals, and since professionals made money from their prints they were not allowed to shoot the City Hall from the public grounds in front of it, unless they had a permit. Anyways, I spent the night playing cat and mouse with these guys/gals and got the shots anyways. I wish I had their Email's so I could send them a copy....permit this little boy/girl :-). You can find the full set of pictures here.

CineGrid 2008 (and 2007) photos from La Jolla, CA…

Flickr, Photography
So I just came back from California a couple of days ago -- La Jolla to be more exact -- and I already wish I was back there. There is something to be said for warm winters :-). Anyways I just finished going through the pictures from this year and found out that I hadn't posted the ones from last year.....must've been something in last years eggnog. They have all been shot on the beach in front of La Jolla Beach Hotel. Anyways, here is a link to the 2008 set and here is one for 2007 set.

Photo: San Diego and surrounding/Austin and surrounding Hill Country

Flickr, Photography
Since I've had the Flu for the past couple of days (yeah great way to end a great trip), I've been at home and had a ton of time to get these pics cooked up . These shots were taken during my recent trip to San Diego, CA -- to attend CSCW2008 -- and Austin, TX -- to attend SC2008.They start off in San Diego with a very cold day trip to Julian, CA. Supposedly the best apple pies are to be had here, but since it was bloody freezing, we skipped all that. Nevertheless a nice little town in the middle of the mountains @ 7000 ft.....what more do you want.We then drove down to Del Mar, CA for a couple of brews and checked out the surf. CSCW reception…
