Markerless Augmented Reality aka. Minority Report Interface….

"Augmented Reality", Disruptive Technology
Well it had to happen sooner or later. YDreams and Canesta Inc. have announced a partnership that will redefine Augmented Reality. We've all seen AR demos where "Real" markers are recognized by machine vision engines and are replaced with "Artificial" objects in the video stream. Canesta has taken the next step and built a camera that can provide a realtime markerless depth map of the scene it's shooting.Canestavision sensor chips fundamentally, work in a manner similar to radar, where the distance to remote objects is calculated by measuring the time it takes an electronic burst of radio waves to make the round trip from a transmitting antenna to a reflective object (like a metal airplane) and back. In the case of these chips, however, a burst of unobtrusive light is…

Augmented Reality Magic…..or simply MAGIC!!!

"Augmented Reality", Computer Vision, Technology, Video
Came across this video today and my first thought was.....magic??....Hmmm.....gotta be a video editing trickbut once I watched it for the fourth time it slowly started to click. This is by far the most innovative use of AR I've seen.....It's fascinating.....It's Magic :-). Watch Marco Tempest do his thing in this video....be warned though...you might have to watch it a couple of times.....it's addictive. Lots of behind the scenes pictures here.BTW. Marco writes:    this is 100% real-time stuff - No post-processing. Programmed In C++ with OpenFrameworks, OpenCV, ARToolkitPlus, MacCam and other Open Source goodies…

"Augmented Reality", Technology
Yep, this must be the newest trick advertisers are devising to get our attention. Michael Eisner's company is trying really hard to make baseball card collecting cool again, by releasing Augmented Reality enhanced cards. You pick these things up for a buck or two, come home and hold the card in front of your webcam and through the magic of Augmented Reality, a 3D representation of your favorite player, complete with stats will pop up on top of the card. Mr. Eisner's company is not the first though, there was a German Mini advertisement that placed a Mini Cabrio on a magazine through some AR magic. So what's next....I don't know.....what do you think?Oh and before I forget.....If you want to try out the Mini Cabrio Ad for yourself, grab this PDF…

Augmented Reality on the Road….

"Augmented Reality", Android, Ar, Research, Technology, Travel
I’ve been a fan of the potential of augmented reality for some time, but the limitation of having to print out and use those funky registration images has always been there. A lot of people are working on solving/helping this problem. One of the groups that has come up with a novel approach is Mobilizy a small team based in Austria.Mobilizy have developed one of the hottest applications available for the new Android G-1 Phone, called Wikitude. You see instead of using registration images for pattern recognition and image substitution, they use the GPS, Digital Compass and camera on the G-1 to deliver one of the first really practical augmented reality applications, excellent for travel and tourism. In what mobilizy has dubbed "CamView" mode, users may hold the phone’s camera against a…
